Condition Solution — Haemoglobinopathy
Thalassaemia Patient Management
Digital patient management software for thalassaemia, built on ProtoFlex's proven haemoglobinopathy platform. Currently in development — register your interest to shape the solution.
In Development — Coming Soon
The ProtoFlex thalassaemia solution is currently in active development. If you are a haematology or thalassaemia clinical lead interested in shaping this solution, we'd love to hear from you. Early adopters will have the opportunity to contribute to co-design.
The Condition
What is Thalassaemia?
Thalassaemia is an inherited blood disorder affecting haemoglobin production, causing the body to make fewer healthy red blood cells than normal. It is closely related to sickle cell disease within the wider haemoglobinopathy spectrum.
There are two main types — alpha thalassaemia and beta thalassaemia — with severity ranging from the thalassaemia trait (carrier) through to transfusion-dependent thalassaemia major. Like sickle cell disease, it predominantly affects people of South Asian, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and African heritage.
Patients with thalassaemia major require regular blood transfusions and iron chelation therapy — demanding close clinical monitoring, strong patient engagement and coordination across specialist teams. These are the same core challenges ProtoFlex has addressed in sickle cell disease.
What We're Planning
Transfusion programme tracking
Scheduling, records and patient communication for regular transfusion cycles
Iron chelation adherence monitoring
Patient-reported outcomes and alerts to support treatment adherence
Annual review & registry submission
Haemoglobinopathy registry support and audit tools
Shared-care coordination
Connecting specialist centres with local services for complex patients
Paediatric to adult transition pathways
Planned — subject to co-design input
Why ProtoFlex
Built on Our Proven Haemoglobinopathy Platform
The thalassaemia solution will be built on the same platform and clinical pathway models that underpin our sickle cell disease solution — already co-designed with leading NHS haemoglobinopathy services.
ProtoFlex can also run alongside your existing systems as a companion protocol. Learn more about our NHS interoperability approach.
Shape the Solution
Be Part of the Co-Design
If you are a thalassaemia clinical lead, service manager or patient advocate and would like to contribute to the design of this solution, we would love to hear from you. Early conversations shape better products.
